Top 5 Albums of 08

28 December 2008 5 Comments

It is always tough to come up with your favorite five albums of the year, especially this year when there were some good albums that came out but nothing that was a classic by any means. Here are our top five albums of 2008 with a good mix of traditional country as well as some modern country.

Ashton Shepherd - Sounds So Good

Ashton Shepherd - Sounds So Good
Probably one of the most underrated albums of the year, it combined modern country sounds with an irresistible twang. Ashton Shepherd may still not be a household name in country music but I think she has the voice and personality to be making albums for years to come. Even though the song didn’t even break the top 10 at any point on the Billboard country album charts it still made our top 5.

Jamey Johnson - That Lonesome Song

Another great album this year was Jamey Johnson’s album That Lonesome Song which received many great reviews throughout the music community but failed to really translate into major sales. The lead single “In Color” was also one of the top singles of the year. The album may not be for everyone but it is a great classic country album that reminds me of a modern day Waylon Jennings.

Taylor Swift Fearless

Taylor Swift - Fearless
At first I must admit I prejudged this album by just the first single “Love Story” which I thought was a corny bubble-gum pop song that somehow passed as country but after listening to the whole album and songs like “Breathe” it is one of the top five albums released this year in the country genre.

Zac Brown Band The Foundation

Coming basically out of nowhere with the single “Chicken Fried” they have catapulted not only to the top of the country scene but also have seen some national spotlight. The album is overall entertaining with a strange mix of country, bluegrass, and indie rock that meshes together seamlessly. This is one of the albums you must own this year no matter what style of music you prefer.

Blake Shelton - Startin Fires

5. Blake Shelton - Startin’ Fires
A great album that is one you can listen to from start to finish. An impressive lead single “She Wouldn’t Be Gone” sets the tone for a versatile album that still has signature Blake Shelton lyrics and style. The appearances of girlfriend Miranda Lambert only adds to the album, it is a great listen to any country music fan and finishes up our top five albums of 08′.

I real think Toby Keith “Does Make Me A Bad Guy” should be in the top 5.

Just Who I am: Poets And Pirates by Kenny Chesney should be on the top too!

I think Sugarland’s Love on the Inside should be #1

Making the top five was a lot tougher than I thought once I got started on it. I liked Toby’s album but it just wasn’t through and through as good as a few others.

Scott I also liked Sugarland’s album but it wasn’t top five quality this year for me. Deb the album of Kenny Chesney’s actually came out in 2007 so I could not include it on my list, but it would have been easily in my top 5 if I would have done one of these for 07′ because it was a great album.
